## HEADLINE Qatari mediators returned to Tehran to push for a US-Iran deal as further tankers were reported struck or set on fire in the Strait of Hormuz, after the top US regional commander briefed Trump on attack options late on 29 October. [125][108][210]

## TODAY IN REVIEW The Strait of Hormuz again dominated reporting, following the IRGC's claim on 29 October that three tankers had hit mines. On 30 October Iran's IRGC and army claimed that four oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines on what they called "unauthorised" southern routes over the past 24 hours, a count that may overlap with the earlier claim, and Iranian state media reported a supertanker explosion after it struck a sea mine. [108][84] UKMTO reported explosive devices attached to a tanker's hull that detonated and damaged its engine room, and Reuters cited security sources saying a tanker had been hit by limpet mines. [172][61] Oman's Maritime Security Centre reported the commercial ship Riti attacked about 10 nautical miles off Musandam, with 25 crew rescued. [85] Iran's navy said two tankers on what it called an "unauthorised route" were halted after an "incident", and the IRGC claimed it destroyed a US military sea drone. CENTCOM called the drone claim false and said all its unmanned surface vessels were accounted for. [89][99][11][50]

In Washington, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper was reported to have briefed Trump and the Defence Secretary on options for a possible attack on Iran, with the first report logged at 19:13 UTC on 29 October. [210] Trump said Iran must pursue a nuclear deal, while also saying the war would be "wrapped up soon". [49][45][91] He said Vice President Vance's outreach to Iran, first reported on 29 October, related to medical supplies, and played down reports of a revived peace effort. [246][93] Qatari mediators returned to Tehran in a renewed push for a US-Iran agreement, in talks reported to be coordinated with Washington. [125]

Elsewhere, the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted ballistic and cruise missiles and drones fired towards Saudi Arabia, including over Riyadh and the Mecca region. The Houthis denied launching a drone towards Mecca. [4][218] Late on 29 October the Houthis claimed six attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities. [159] Clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis were reported around Taiz. [119]

## BY REGION ### Strait of Hormuz and Gulf - Iran's IRGC and army claimed four tankers caught fire on "unauthorised" southern routes over 24 hours; the IRGC had claimed three such incidents on 29 October. ### Saudi Arabia and Yemen - The coalition said it intercepted ballistic and cruise missiles and drones fired at the kingdom; the Houthis denied targeting Mecca. [4] - Clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis were reported south of Taiz. [119]

### Lebanon and Palestine - Middle East Eye reported that an eight-year-old boy died of wounds from Israeli gunfire in Khan Younis. [13] - The IDF said it destroyed two Hamas weapons storage facilities in Al-Bureij and Gaza City. [150]

## MARKET IMPACT Brent crude was 113.63, down 1.82%, as at 18:30 UTC, while WTI was 104.38, up 1.54%. Gold was 3878.76, down 3.56%. The shekel was 0.3177, down 1.22%. At last close the volatility index was 19.27, up 15.67%. Tel Aviv 35 closed down 2.82% and the aerospace and defence basket down 2.40%. ZIM shipping closed at 29.72, up 0.51%. We make no causal link between these moves and the day's events.
