## HEADLINE US and Iran ended a tense round of indirect talks in Doha, focused on the Strait of Hormuz. Markets eased as tanker traffic picked up, but both sides kept trading accusations. The next meeting is set for after Ayatollah Khamenei's funeral [38][50][86].
## TODAY IN REVIEW Doha was the main diplomatic focus today. Qatari mediators moved between separate US and Iranian delegations before both sides confirmed the round had ended [98][109]. Qatar's foreign minister said progress was positive and built on earlier Switzerland talks. Discussions are set to resume after Khamenei's funeral, which is scheduled between 4 and 9 July [96][97][50]. The main dispute stayed the Strait of Hormuz. Iran rejected maritime passage without its permission and ordered vessels onto a Tehran-designated route. Washington's UN envoy said the Strait must remain open to all, while CENTCOM brought together twelve regional states in Manama to stress freedom of navigation [131][63][6][126]. Reports also pointed to a US offer to unfreeze roughly 6 billion dollars in Iranian funds, tied to Tehran commitments, with Iran indicating the money would go toward goods purchases including US agricultural products [5][122][64][89].
Rhetoric remained sharp on both sides. Iran's foreign ministry called the US-regional meeting "propaganda shows" and accused Washington of "performative posturing." The IRGC warned against any aggression in Hormuz and said it would obey Mujtaba Khamenei as successor [10][4][61][71]. Bahrain used its UN Security Council session to condemn recent Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks as "treacherous aggression" against densely populated civilian areas [17][16][18]. Washington also kept military options clearly on the table if talks fail [120].
Outside the Gulf, Lebanon drove much of the regional agenda. President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam defended their Israel framework agreement against Hezbollah criticism, saying it is a negotiating framework, not a treaty. Israeli withdrawal from designated areas is expected within days [73][112][108]. Lebanon and Syria also announced a good-neighbourliness agreement, set up a supreme joint committee, and agreed to coordinate on border control and weapons smuggling [35][48][56]. Meanwhile, Israeli strikes and search operations continued across southern Lebanon, and IRGC operations against Kurdish opposition groups continued in Iran's northwest border area despite the ceasefire [95][74][77].

## MARKET IMPACT Energy markets eased as Hormuz throughput moved above 10 million barrels per day and tanker traffic returned to normal, with Saudi Ras Tanura loadings restarting as an important confidence signal [86][69]. Iraq reported 800,000 barrels per day of June crude exports, and Iranian exports increased after a US sanctions waiver, which added supply-side comfort [43][67]. The idea of unfreezing Iranian funds and rolling out the MOU in phases supported the de-escalation view traders preferred [132][122]. Defence equities still have support, given the IDF Chief of Staff's warning that all theatres remain active and ready for "rapid escalation" [15].
## TONIGHT / TOMORROW Watch the overnight Hormuz picture closely. Iran's insistence on its designated route, against US freedom-of-navigation demands, keeps collision risk high despite the diplomatic pause [63][6]. Khamenei's funeral window of 4 to 9 July is the key near-term event, with Iran warning against any strike on its territory during that period [26][50]. Also watch whether Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese framework areas happens "within days" as Salam said, and monitor continued IRGC-Kurdish clashes in the northwest [108][84]. The next US-Iran round is set for 18 July [44].
