## HEADLINE Multiple vessels were struck in the Strait of Hormuz and reporting indicated the United States was withdrawing from Iraq, as indirect US-Iran talks continued through Qatari mediators. [140][136][134]

## TODAY IN REVIEW A series of strikes hit shipping in the Strait of Hormuz through the day. UKMTO reported a vessel struck by an unknown projectile [135], and separately noted a time-delayed incident in the strait [146]. An oil tanker under US escort caught fire after being struck by a projectile [244][251], and a commercial vessel was struck north of Khasab with an onboard fire reported [259]. Iran was reported to have launched drones and anti-ship cruise missiles toward the strait [10][277], and Iranian state TV attributed sounds near Qeshm Island to warning shots at what it called violating vessels [283]. The Pentagon confirmed 29 Navy sailors and 10 Marines wounded in action across the Middle East in September, including from an Iranian cruise missile strike [219]; earlier Monday reporting said eight Marines were injured in an attack on a non-military vessel in the Gulf [278][215]. Iran's army chief said the strait was closed [309], while other reporting and our own view of throughput indicated oil continued to flow.

Reporting indicated the United States was completing its withdrawal from Iraq after more than two decades, with Iran-backed groups claiming victory [136][101]. Italy announced the complete withdrawal of its forces [93], the US withdrew Patriot systems and heavy equipment with soldiers moving to Jordan and the wider region [250], and the Kurdistan Region warned the timing came at a sensitive moment [320]. Kata'ib Hezbollah warned it would shoot down "hostile" aircraft in Iraqi airspace after the withdrawal [208].

Diplomacy ran in parallel. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said Tehran had discussed proposals with Qatari mediators and expected a US response via Doha [151][263], and Qatar confirmed it was relaying messages between the two sides [26][134]. Trump said the conflict would end "very, very soon" [27] and denied an Axios report that he had offered sanctions relief or the release of frozen funds [160][270]. US and Iranian officials both rejected making nuclear concessions [211][297]. Follow-on reporting on Netanyahu's Sunday visit to the UAE, where he met President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed [285][248], said Israeli media reported attendance by other Arab states [222].

## MARKET IMPACT Brent crude was 96.60, down 1.83%, and WTI 89.38, down 2.91%, as at 17:40 UTC, both lower despite the reported strikes on Hormuz shipping. Saudi Arabia resumed oil loading at Yanbu after restarting its east-west pipeline [179], and our feed and reporting both point to continued throughput. Gold was 4,147.70, up 0.79%. The shekel was little changed at 0.3254, down 0.06%. Equity and defence gauges that only repeated prior-day recycle patterns were left aside.

## TONIGHT / TOMORROW Watch for the US response Araghchi said Iran expected via Doha [151][258], and for further Hormuz incidents given the day's pattern of strikes on escorted and commercial vessels [244][259]. In Iraq, monitor for security incidents in the immediate aftermath of the withdrawal and the Kata'ib Hezbollah airspace threat [208][275]. UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia [295][310], and Netanyahu's evening security assessment follows his Sunday UAE trip [36][285].
